It was sunny and hot, the middle of summer. I steered the Camaro up the cracked cement streets that switch-backed their way up the east side of Queen Anne Hill. Cars sat parallel parked on each side of the street, baking in the sun. I pulled up outside Layne’s and stubbed out my cigarette. His old red Pontiac Bonneville and a new Harley Springer were parked outside. He was expecting me so he opened the door when I knocked.
